Tourists often overlook this incredible non-touristic destination of Colombia with pristine jungle, isolated beaches, an authentic rural culture and the incredible humpback whales. With hardly any Internet, Colombia’s Pacific Coast is the perfect place to turn off from the rest of the world and get connected with the ocean, the unspoiled beaches, the overwhelming rain-forest and the locals.
After taking a flight to Colombia’s coastal city Nuquí in the Choco department, there are plenty options to make this trip a breathtaking experience. Wherever you go, you have to go by boat, because roads are hard to find. Visit the Afro-Colombian community of Coquí and make a guided tour through one of the best-preserved mangroves in Colombia in traditional chingos, being hand-carved canoes.
Go to Guachalito Beach and the area around it, an hour by boat from Nuquí. Here, you’ll find hidden beaches, untamed jungle and the best humpback whale watching. Only from July to October, plenty of whales can be found in these waters, being there to give birth. Walk, during low tide, to the authentic little village of Termales. Here you can relax in its hot springs and go for an adventurous guided trek through the jungle towards some beautiful waterfalls. Walking back, don’t forget to climb Morro Terco, a small private island with a breathtaking view.
Overnight stays are on the edge of the jungle, mostly only a few meters from the beach. Stay in one of the local guesthouses or in a beach cabin, and enjoy the peaceful rest, the regional culture and plenty of popular Pacific Coast food like fresh fish, coconut rice and staple foods during this amazing trip.
